Xenolith Evangelion is a queer alien folk opera conceived by interdisciplinary artist [M] Dudeck, situated within a speculative universe of invented religions, fragmented histories, and imagined civilizations, bringing together performance, visual art, costume, and an evolving mythology.
For the project, Nina Spade designed and created costumes, adornments, and headpieces worn by M Dudeck, Javi Acevedo, Daniel Peloquin Hopfner, and Brandon Michael.
Working at the intersection of wearable sculpture and performance, these pieces contribute to the physical presence and visual identities of the performers. Through material, silhouette, and ornament, the designs give tangible form to elements of the project's imagined world.
The work reflects an interest in costume not simply as clothing, but as an expressive medium through which character, symbolism, and narrative can take physical shape.
Moving between the archaic and the futuristic, the project constructs its queer mythology through music, ritual, performance, language, and material artifacts. Each element offers a partial glimpse into a larger world whose histories, beliefs, and cultural identities are continually taking shape.
The result is an evolving work of speculative worldbuilding in which mythology is narrated, performed, embodied, and materially constructed.
